Stain me.

I was very impressed by this product.

Cheeky swatch
Stain left when swatch was removed with a facewipe

You have most likely seen these amazing "revolutionary" glossy lipstains from YSL popping up all over beauty blogs. I first came across this beauty after watching one of Lisa Eldridge's tutorials.

I recently bought one for myself, No8 Orange de Chine. I love corals, and they really make my eyes pop. I have a ByTerry Nail Laquer Terrybly in Eccentric Vermillion that I cannot wait to wear along side this colour.

As you can see from the swatch photos above, the stain is incredible - I literally wiped instantly after taking the photo of the first swatch as I was worried it would stain my hand - I was too slow, it already had done. The texture is very light and just glides onto the lips perfectly, no stickiness or gloop from the gloss, and no dry feeling you get from some lip stains.

Slightly pricey for a lip product, at £22.50, but it really is worth it. I cannot wait to buy more colours.

All a girl needs is Chanel... and a little splash of pink.

not a great angle for my nose.... damn it.

I have fallen in love with Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. I had seen and heard amazing reviews, and told myself to hang on and finish off the foundation I was using - especially as I rarely use foundation, I am more of a tinted moisturiser girl.

I had even persuaded my mum to buy it a wee while ago. We were out shopping and she was hovering around the beauty counters looking for something new to try. I ushered her over to Chanel, where we bought a few things, including Vitalumiere Aqua and she absolutely loved it. Her skin looked immaculate, fresh, dewy, and glowing.

I love foundation that gives you a healthy glow. I am not a fan of the matte, aging, powdered look.

I asked my mum to comment for my blog, she sums it up perfectly:

"Really light, feels good on the skin and looks natural. I would definitely recommend it - oh and the mascara!"

So, anyway, I landed back in the UK and decided to try it for myself.

I used no primer and no translucent setting powder - I wanted to try this out on its own, no help. It went onto my skin beautifully, the texture is so light you barely feel it on your skin. I would say it has light to medium coverage - again perfect for those of you, like me, who are not a fan of covering the skin with a blanket of make-up. I like to let my skin come through, natural is far better than looking like you have had your face dragged across a M.A.C counter.

I wore it all day and it lasted, the entire day! My nose got a teeny bit shiny, but that is my skin for you, yet I did not feel the need to use powder at all.

The shade I am wearing is 40 Beige.

I cannot wait to buy more shades to put into my pro kit. Chanel you have completely won me over.

I am also trying out new blushers at the moment. I picked up this pink No7 blusher. A girl can never have too many pink blushers in her make-up bag! The shade I am wearing is Candy Pink, its not too overpowering but is a definite splash of colour.

There you go, a little review on the foundation I am currently obsessing over.

P.S If you are after a cheaper alternative, try Bourjois Healthy Mix Gel Serum foundation. Very similar.

See you soon,

Daily Routine, My Personal Make-up Bag.

Instead of looking at what I have in my pro kit, in this post I thought I would go over what I have in my personal make-up bag at the moment. I tend to keep the contents of my personal bag small, and I sometimes, very naughtily, borrow eye shadows and mascaras from my pro kit. I hate carrying loads of products around with me, and on a daily basis I rarely wear a lot of make-up. Keeping it simple works much better for me - I have a habit of being late for everyone and everything so keeping my own personal make-up routine short and sweet is handy when I am in a rush.

My Daily Routine

After my skincare routine, which is a chore in itself, (Dermalogica: PreCleanse, Special Cleansing Gel, Daily Microfoliant, Multi Active Toner) I apply my Dermalogica Sheer Tint Moisture spf15, which unlike most tinted moisturisers, is actually my skincare as well.

Sheer Tint Moisture comes in 3 shades, at the moment I am using Medium. I love it because it is oil free just like my usual moisturiser - Dermalogica Active Moist - leaves a non greasy finish and has sun protection in too. The coverage is light-medium, it does look like you are wearing a light foundation which I didn't expect when I first bought it. I love my tinted moisturisers and I am really happy with this one so far.

Wearing just the Sheer Tint Moisture
Next, I use my Illamasqua concealer - if this ever discontinued I would weep, it is the best concealer for coverage and I have tried a LOT! I tend to use this on my chin where I get random hormonal spots. Not photographed, because I have ran out, is my YSL Touche Eclat highlighter pen! I would use this underneath my eyes and round the edge of my nose.

I much prefer looking as natural as possible, so instead of caking myself in powder and bronzer, I have been using the Nars Illuminator in Laguna just to give my face more of a dewy look as well as that little bit of colour. It is really easy to apply with your fingers, I just blend a tiny bit into my cheeks and along the bridge of my nose.

Concealer, highlighter, blusher and a dab of Vaseline on my lips.

Subtle highlighter and a little blush
Once I have finished with the Nars Illuminator, I will sweep on a M.A.C blusher, usually a pinky rose shade as I find pink really brightens the face and gives you a healthy glow. The shade I am wearing is Pink Swoon.

My favourite stage is next: The eyebrows! As you can see I have invisible, thin eyebrows - not attractive.

I usually use Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Thunder, as shown in the very first photo, but I do sometimes use a M.A.C Eyebrow Pencil in Dirty Blonde, which I did end up using when taking the photos for this blog post. I think the eyebrow cake is brilliant and leaves a very natural finish - no scouse brow! I did however want more prominent eyebrows on this occasion, hence the pencil.

EYEBROWS! WOO :)

Last, but not least, tis mascara. I do love mascara, but I hate putting it on. I curl my lashes first with my Shu Uemura eye lash curler and then whip a quick coating of black over the top. I just find it very boring putting mascara on, and half the time I poke my eye or get it all over my hands....I use the Maybelline Colossal Volume Cat Eyes Mascara in the day and in the evening I have started using YSL Shocking Mascara, which is amazing. I have nothing on my lips asides from a dab of Vaseline, not a fan of wearing anything exciting on my lips in the day time.

Check out my hilbilly tooth poking out right there....

Wah-La! That is my Daily Routine folks - well on the days I put make-up on, I go through phases of not wearing any to let my skin breathe! What do you guys have inside your make-up bags? Is there anything you cannot live without and must wear on a daily basis?

I hope you enjoyed this little post, and I shall see you soon :)

IAMUAK: Foundations

Odd title. It stands for Inside A Make-up Artist's Kit. This second chapter being about, Foundations. You can see my first chapter here on Brushes.

Hello Lovelies,

I thought it might be interesting to give you a little insight into the contents of my professional make-up kit. I know, personally, I love finding out what other people in the industry are using, what their must-haves are, the products they cannot live without. Looking into another make-up artist's kit is like looking into a treasure chest, I just love it when you discover something new. I am like a big kid when it comes to make-up, playing with shiny, pretty bottles and mixing colours together, its all very exciting. So, on that crazy note, here are the foundations that I have in my own treasure chest:

In My Kit:

I have a small selection of foundations in my kit, a few random ones I have picked up here and there but the ones I predominantly use and love are the ones listed below:

My favourite foundation by far in terms of price, packaging, texture and longevity. Depending on stockists, the price ranges from £20-£25 so a little more than high street brands but not verging on Giorgio Armani foundation prices (tres expensive!).

I came across this by chance, a lady came into the SpaceNK store I used to work at, asking if we stocked the brand Jemma Kidd, unfortunately we did not. I asked her what product she was looking for, as I wanted to try and help her find something similar to try. She exclaimed that the Light As Air foundation was all she needed for her kit, as it was perfect for shoots and made the skin look flawless.

She was very adamant that I had to try this foundation myself, so I did and have never looked back. It is a really light, liquid formula, and you need very little of the product on application. I would say that coverage is medium-full - its not Estee Double Wear, but redness, spots and blemishes are easily covered. I have used it on myself and models and have found that it is great for even those with combination and oily skin - it contains properties that help to keep the skin matte and shine free. It comes in a range of 7 shades, which for a make-up artist may appear disappointing but I think its great - less to carry in my kit and when I need to I can mix and blend two together to get the perfect match.

I use it out here in Mallorca, where the models can get very hot during shoots causing their make-up to drip off, yet I have found with this foundation I very rarely have to touch up the base and it lasts near enough all day long. It really is fab and I would recommend to all.

If you want a long-lasting, great coverage, lightweight foundation then this is for you.

Stockists: Some SpaceNK stores and online.

The latest addition to my kit, I didn't like this foundation at first. The texture baffled me a little and I wasn't really impressed by the coverage, but I have since changed my mind, you just have to understand the water-based formula and hey presto with a little bit of patience and a good foundation brush this stuff does make the skin look fabulous. You can read more about my thoughts on this foundation here on an earlier post.

Overall it gives a gorgeous natural finish, coverage is buildable and slightly dewy, looks great on camera and M.A.C even claim it to be water resistant. No wonder every make-up artist has this in their kit.

Being an avid fan of the amazingly talented Lisa Eldridge, international celebrity make-up artist, I came across this foundation when watching one of her tutorials - I love that Lisa uses both high street and designer brands in her professional kit. I bought this at first for my personal make-up bag, usually I stick to tinted moisturiser, but I wanted to try something with slightly more coverage, so opted for this foundation. It is very lightweight formula, which smooths over the skin effortlessly, giving a little more coverage than a tinted moisturiser. I would still need to use my Illamasqua concealer over the top for blemishes and dark circles. What I do love about this product, in particular, is the fact it gives your skin such a healthy glow.

There are 6 shades available retailing at £10.99. Stockists include Boots and Superdrug. I bought the three lightest shades to start out with, so far I am really happy with this foundation and will buy the darker shades also, so my set is complete.

Another foundation which I have in my personal make-up bag also, Nars Sheer Glow gives full coverage, without the matte finish. If you haven't noticed I much prefer natural, dewy textures to that of a matte foundation, (I find matte foundations to be aging on the skin, just a personal preference), this leaves a satin finish as well as brightening the appearance of the skin. This foundation is great for normal and combination skin, but I would not recommend for a dryer, older skin as it can sometimes appear flaky and chalk like. Nars do recommend this product for dry skin but with my experience it really does not compliment that skin type.

The image above shows two of the sample sizes I carry in my kit, I was lucky enough to get my hands on quite a few of the shades and they are great when you need to take a small kit with you on location shoots. I very rarely need to use a concealer on top of this foundation as the coverage is so good. Again, long lasting foundations are key to have in make-up artists kit, you don't want to be touching up the base every ten minutes, and this Nars foundation does hold really well.

Available in 20 shades and retailing at £29.50. Stockists include Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and SpaceNK.

Last October someone stole my make-up kit, but that's another story. So, as a result,  I had a massive dilemma of putting together a new make-up kit on a budget but with good quality products. A girl I used to work with at SpaceNK, Rhiannon, had once worked for Illamasqua. She said the Rich Liquid foundation was amazing. So, never before had I used this brand, I went onto their website.

Thank the Make-up God for Pro Discount. Hello 40% off for professional make-up artists.

I went a little crazy and bought everything from these foundations, to brushes, to eyebrow cakes. From the moment my new shiny products arrived I was in love with this brand, and if for some reason Pro Discount was to suddenly disappear, it would not deter me away from Illamasqua.

All of the products, are high end quality, well packaged and worth every penny. As for this Rich Liquid foundation, it feels thick in texture in comparison to all the other foundations in my kit,and you only need a small amount. When they say a little goes a long way, it really is true in this case. You need to really buff this foundation into the skin, so I find using Kabuki style brushes work best, so yes it requires a little more work than the lighter foundations but the end result is worth it.

It feels light and airy on the skin, but the coverage is amazing. Flawless. Perfect for shoots, the camera is definitely not going to detect any blemishes underneath the layer of this foundation.

There are 6 shades available, I recommend getting shade 100, the pure white foundation as this is always handy to have in your kit if you need to lighten other foundations or want a perfect white base for your canvas.

 Wish List

I still desire many more foundations for my kit and I currently have my heart set on these bad boys:

 by Chanel

by Chanel

by Tom Ford

Now you have seen all the foundations I have in my kit, which ones do you guys prefer?

One final note: When choosing a foundation for your own personal make-up bag, always try and get a sample first and try in-store where possible. Ask the sales assistant or in-store artist to apply a small amount on your jaw line or by the side of your nose (where oil absorbs foundation the most). Once applied take a small mirror outside or near to as natural light as possible and check the colour match. There should be no evidence at all of foundation, no orange lines please! If you want to try before you buy, take a small container into the store and ask for a sample.

I hope you enjoyed this post,

See you soon,

New Additions to the Kit

Hey Guys,

So, I bought some new foundation and under-eye concealers from M.A.C Cosmetics for my kit a few weeks ago but wanted to trial and test them before I decided to blog about them. Now then,  I do realise that I am only about a zillion years late to clamber onto the Face and Body Foundation bus, seriously, have I had my head in a hole for the entirety of my make-up career? So a huge apology to those who are sick of reading beauty posts on this product, however, if like me you are a stranger to this liquid magic then go ahead and enjoy this little post.

I went into the store in Liverpool, where I am a regular these days, and asked one of the make-up artists to grab me some disposable wands. Now bless her heart, there were no packets in stock so she did a scout around the store and cheekily put together a collection of lots of different in-store disposable wands for me to take. This little stroke of kindness made me trust this girl, so I decided to ask her opinion on what products were, in her opinion, essential for a make-up artist.

She went straight to the Face and Body foundation (durrr) and dismissed my ignorance for having no idea about this product. Before continuing to tell me about this foundation, she then told me she recognised me from school, and then it hit me, her older sister was in fact in my year and at that moment I remembered the friendly face. Small world! So Charlotte Perry take a bow and thank you for your help.

The dewy, water based, water resistant foundation I could see had a very similar consistency to that of my Jemma Kidd foundation which I was in fear of running out of ( Light As Air Foundation has sold out in a few colours and I am now on the waiting list). Charlotte explained that as well as being light on the skin it had a really good coverage and was perfect for the type of shoots I work on. Heavy foundations are no use in Mallorca, they would just melt off in the heat.

Impressed, I then also asked her what under eye concealer she would recommend. I am always trying out new under eye concealers as I like to have a variety in my kit. The eye area is a fickle place on the face and one product may not necessarily be right for all.

Prep & Prime Highlighter, not titled as an under eye concealer, but Sophie promised the highlighting properties were great for disguising blue undertones and dark circles. The shades available reminded me of the By Terry Colour Correcting primers, by where flesh tones are not available but more the undertone needed in which to counter act the colour underneath. I bought them, tried them, so what was my verdict?

At first I did not like the foundation, I felt like I was cheating on Jemma Kidd, but as I got used to the consistency and buffed it into my models skin I realised just how fabulous this product really is and why so many of you love it too. It claims to be long lasting, and it really is. When I first tried it out on a recent shoot, touch ups were not needed to the base, only a little bit of powder and lip gloss was reapplied throughout the day. The Prep & Prime Highlighters are no Touche Eclat, however they really are a great alternative to your usual under eye concealer, they are really lightweight and blend into the skin perfectly. No complaints :)

Keep your eyes pealed for my next post as I will be continuing with Inside a Make-up Artist's Kit, the next chapter following on nicely from this post: Foundations.

Need a new foundation and not sure where to start? Want to know which one is best for your skin type? These questions will be answered and much more.
